Welcome to Manifest Differently, the podcast for neurodivergent thinkers and anyone looking to approach manifestation in a way that truly works for them. I'm your host, carissa Andrews, here to explore the science, energy and strategies that will help you create the life you love. Let's dive in and Manifest Differently.
Carissa Andrews:Hey there guys. Welcome back to Manifest Differently, a podcast for neurodivergent creators, disruptors and manifestors who are done trying to fit into neurotypical boxes. I'm your host, carissa Andrews, and today we're talking about a spicy topic that I know is going to land for a lot of us the line between passion and obsession. Now, if you're someone who gets hyper-focused, dives deep and pours every ounce of your being into something you're really excited about, this one's for you, because here's the truth. Neurodivergent manifestors are wired for intensity. We need something to chase. It's part of how our brains and bodies operate, but sometimes what we think is passion is actually obsession, and while one of those fuels us, the other kind of fries our system. Ask me how I know. So today we're exploring what it really means to move from obsession to passion and why that shift changes everything about how we manifest. We're going to talk about what the difference actually feels like in the body, why neurodivergent folks blur the line more than most, and how you can start noticing the signs before burnout hits. And, of course, if you want the full breakdown on how to pull back from obsession without losing your spark, you'll want to join me inside this week's companion episode of the Deep End, my exclusive sub-stack podcast, where we get into the juicy how and now of every topic. I'm sharing my exact process for resetting the nervous system and building neurodivergent-friendly passion anchors. You won't want to miss it.
Carissa Andrews:But before we dive deeper, let's take a moment to regulate our energy and come back into our bodies, wherever you are, if it's safe to do so. I want you to close your eyes, take a slow, deep breath in through your nose, hold it at the top for just a beat and exhale gently, letting the air out of your mouth. Let's do that one more time, but, but this time. Imagine you're breathing in clarity and breathing out. Any urgency or pressure that you've been carrying Feels good, doesn't it? One last breath, inhaling passion, that warm, alive feeling. Exhale obsession, that tight, frantic grip. Now place a hand on your heart and repeat this, silently or out loud. I can hold big desires without holding my breath. Feel that for a second, let it land and, when you're ready, bring your awareness back, because we're about to break down a big energetic distinction that can shift everything. So what's the difference between obsession and passion, and why do we blur that line? Well, let's start with the energy.
Carissa Andrews:Obsession often shows up as urgency, right, there's this tightening in the body, the feeling that you have to keep going, you can't stop thinking about it and if you don't do something right now, everything is going to fall apart. It's hyper fixation with a side of panic, basically, and, trust me, I felt this so many times throughout the years, whether it be in school, whether it be me trying to launch careers or publish books faster, whatever the case might be, it definitely feels like that. Now you might find yourself constantly checking metrics. Been there, totally spiraling in your mind oh yep, check mark, reworking the same project endlessly, or physically collapsing after a big push. Sometimes I even do that at the end of the day, when it's been a huge, hectic, frantic day. Right, because obsession is that voice that keeps saying just one more thing and then I'll rest, but that rest never really comes. So we end up burning out. We end up having all these issues come on, health issues until our body finally goes nope, we're done and you do have to focus on it. You either have a health collapse or a career collapse. Something happens in your reality that makes you go. Oh crap, I need to stop Now. Passion, on the other hand, feels like flow. It's still intense, for sure, but in a way that activates you, not drains you. You're lit up, you're curious, present, the body feels more alive, not more tense. There's space, there's breath, and it feels like you're technically receiving some awesome insights from the universe.
Carissa Andrews:And here's the tricky part for us neurodivergent manifestors, though those two energies can look similar on the outside, but they actually land very differently in the body, don't they? I know, for me, there have been many times where I thought I was operating out of passion for what I was doing, for what I was creating, only to realize that was not the case, right? So why do we blur this line? Well, it's because we're wired for dopamine seeking. Our brains crave novelty and stimulation, especially when we care deeply about something, that intensity feels good. Until it doesn't, and add to that a lifetime of being told, we're too much, too loud, too intense, too obsessed, and it makes sense that we lean into doing to prove our worth, right? So we chase the external results, to feel safe, to feel seen, to feel like we're enough. And when we finally find something that lights us up, there's this fear that if we stop find something that lights us up, there's this fear that if we stop, even for a second, the momentum will disappear, the magic will vanish, and we'll go back to feeling empty. Right, so we keep going, even when our body is begging us to stop. But here's the truth Obsession is a trauma pattern.
Carissa Andrews:It's survival energy disguised as purpose. Ouch, let that hit for a second, because I know for me, when I really dug into it and realized that I was like whoa, that's yeah, that's what I'm doing. That's crazy. Now passion, though, is your truth. It's your soul, reminding you why you're here and how you're meant to feel, while you create Now as a manifesting generator. This is something that I've had to lean into and start really looking at every single day. Otherwise, I do have a tendency to slip back into obsession, and it's different and it's difficult sometimes, but this shift from obsession to passion, it's not about doing less. It's about doing it all from a place of alignment. Just not adrenaline, right, not from all the craziness, not fear, but instead from embodiment. There's that word, again, I love embodiment.
Carissa Andrews:This month, well, this year, it seems to be the big theme of the year. So when you move from that space, manifestation becomes sustainable, your nervous system becomes your ally, and things that you're calling in. You know, those things that you've been calling in for a long time. They start finally coming to you, and not just because of your effort, but because of your energetic match. Now here's what I want you to take with you today. You don't need to chase the thing, whatever it is. You need to become the version of you who already has it.
Carissa Andrews:Now, when you're locked in obsession, you're in a state of lack, you're holding your breath, you're trying to prove, trying to control, but passion. Passion breathes, passion trusts and passion receives. That's been another big word for me lately, one that I have leaned into a lot with my practice every single day, like leaning back into receivership instead of just manifestation, right. So the next time you feel that familiar spiral, the frantic refresh, checking, checking, the panic when things slow down, I want you to pause and ask yourself is this coming from truth or from trauma? Because your truth will never require you to burn yourself out, ever. It's kind of crazy when we think about that.
Carissa Andrews:Sometimes we put ourselves into these positions where it feels like we have to keep going because something inside of us is trying to claw its way out. I know I definitely feel that way when I'm integrating new energies, even from. You know the human resonance from external forces, whatever, when a new version of myself is trying to come out. But I have to remind myself that that's not required. Trauma responses are not required. Obsession is not required. Instead, you're allowed to care deeply, without gripping tightly. You're allowed to want big things and still feel safe in your body Ooh, that was a good one. You're allowed to rest and still be magnetic.
Carissa Andrews:Sometimes we think that there's a and or situation instead of a. I can be both right, I can rest and I can call in what I need. I can be contemplative, I can feel like I'm out of whack, but still receive. I can be stressed out and feel like I'm messing it all up sometimes, but I can still receive. Sometimes, I think a lot of us neurodivergents. We like to think it's a very black and white situation, but ultimately we're the ones defining what we receive and how it gets to come to us. So we just need to reframe it a little bit and allow ourselves some of those gray areas, even when it feels like what? How can, how can I chill out and still receive? Well, we define our reality and it's up to us to choose a reality that works for us instead of against us, and neurotypicals have set up this stage in a way that makes us feel like it has to be hustle in order to receive. But that's not the case. We can choose to align with who we are and trust that when we are having down days or off days or spiral days or stressful days, that it doesn't mean anything about what we get to receive. It just means we're a human having a human experience that particular day right.
Carissa Andrews:So the more you practice passion over obsession, the more ease, flow and abundance you'll begin to see in your life. It's really that simple. And, yes, sometimes obsession starts from passion. So sometimes we do start from that place of I love this thing and I want to go here, and then obsession spirals out of it. Right, but the key here is to know when we've kind of crossed that threshold into obsession and pull ourselves back into passion. Pull ourselves back into that place where we are being fed from the universe and not being drained from it.
Carissa Andrews:So if this episode stirred something in you, if you're realizing oh wow, I've been living an obsession and calling it passion, you're so not alone. This is a pattern so many of us fall into, especially especially neurodivergent creators, entrepreneurs, neurodivergent manifestors and the good news it's we can shift it. We can. You can manifest with ease, alignment and safety without losing your fire, without losing your identity, without losing the passion to the thing that you were really just loving up on right.
